Mastering Reinjection in the Hellisheidi Field, Sw-iceland: a Story of Successes and Failures
نویسنده
چکیده
Reinjection has posed a major problem in the operation of the Hellisheidi Power Plant, SWIceland. The formation temperature at the originally planned reinjection zone proved to be very hot (>300°C) when injection wells were drilled there. In order to be able to use that zone for production a new reinjection zone was planned. The new zone has been promising despite problems in operating the new injection wells. The wells are drilled into a fault that is active and injection tests have resulted in swarms of small earthquakes. The injectivity of the wells in the new reinjection zone is highly dependent on temperature of the reinjected water. This dependence can be explained by thermo-mechanical effects on fractures in the fracture governed reservoir.

Sustainable Utilization of Geothermal Resources for 100 – 300 Years
Geothermal resources have the potential of contributing significantly to sustainable development in many parts of the world. Sustainable management of a geothermal resource involves utilization at a rate, which may be maintained for a very long time (100300 years). The energy production potential of geothermal systems is primarily determined by the pressure decline caused by production. Overexp...

The Viability of Biofuels in Developing Countries: Successes, Failures, and Challenges
In the last few decades, finding alternatives to fossil fuels has become a hot issue across all international frontiers. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has shed light on the feasibility of using biofuels to meet the growing energy demand as well as to reduce CO2 emissions which are a major cause of global warming, especially in the transportation sector. The...
متن کاملMain Considerations in the Protection System Design for a Geothermal Power Plant
A proper protection system guarantees reliable and safe operation for a geothermal power plant. It is one of the most important factors during system engineering design and must be carefully selected to avoid equipment damage due to failures. The process design should include the selection of a protection scheme as well as adequate main and auxiliary equipment and installation considerations. A...
متن کاملGeothermal Projects in Turkey: Extreme Greenhouse Gas Emission Rates Comparable to or Exceeding Those from Coal-fired Plants
Geothermal power projects in Turkey are outliers for this technology because of their very high CO2 emissions rates (800-1600 g/kWhr) which are comparable to or significantly exceed those from coal-fired power generation (940-980 g/kW-hr). A “typical” 50 MW geothermal project in Turkey producing 1000 g/kW-hr CO2 emits 1,200 tonnes per day of CO2 to the atmosphere. CO2 is discharged to the atmos...
